FEMMES FIRST 2023

Celebrating W.o.W (Wonder of Women)

On 520 day, which is an unofficial Chinese Valentine’s Day, the local cycling community from all over the island assembled to show their love for outstanding female cyclists at FEMMES FIRST 2023.

The first-ever female-focused blended cycling event in Singapore saw around 1,000 cyclists of different abilities - using a vast array of mobility devices from recliners, trikes, foldables, road-bikes, hybrid-bikes, mountain bikes,

adaptive bikes and more – gathered at the Singapore Sports Hub in the early morning and early evening.

W.o.W. Award Winner crowned before an Inclusive Parade wowed participants
After a month of public voting, Candy Yap was declared the winner of the first ever Wonder of Women (WoW) award by Sing See Soon for her contributions to the community. Yap, a care associate of Home Nursing Foundation, not only cycles with seniors, but also delivers food on her bicycle to needy patients.

She beat Irene Tan, Jessica Chee, Anne Ang and Cheryl Tay who are all prominent cyclists who had spearheaded fund-raisers and raised awareness for important issues.

Following the WoW Award presentation attended by Guest-of-Honour, Poh Li San, Grassroots Advisor and Member of Parliament for Sembawang GRC, attendees were treated to a Ride as One inclusive mobility parade comprising seniors and staff from Home Nursing Foundation, representatives of Bike Aid and FBS Aride and differently-abled riders from Pedal enAble Ageless Bicyclists.

FEMMES FIRST is a recipient of Sport Singapore’s Bring Sport Back Blended Events initiative aimed at reinvigorating mass participation events and is also supported by Kallang Alive Sports Management.

Winner of the inaugural WoW award, Candy Yap (3rd from left) together with women of influence in the business and political spheres.

Stringent Eco-Measures to deliver Singapore's 1st climate-positive sports event

Unlike conventional cycling events where participants drive or commute to the start-finish point, Femmes First participants have three options. They can cycle from anywhere anytime, start from Merlion Park or ride at Kallang either in the morning or in the evening. Cyclists passing by the Sports Hub can also enjoy the festivities.

Unnecessary onsite advertising, goodie bags, event collaterals like wristbands, signages and more were cut out. Instead of having multiple sponsors deliver premiums using their company vans to the event site, the RIDEnjoy team reduced reliance on external logistical transport by collecting premiums and collaterals in a single trip using its company van.

Working with sustainability start-up Zuno Carbon which audited the event’s carbon footprint, Femmes First’s estimated 2000kg CO2 emission was offset through the planting of 50 Rhizophora mucronate in a mangrove swamp reforestation project in Indonesia that will capture 2,500kg CO2. Mangrove forests capture four times more carbon than tropical forests and are important in the fight against climate change. Through Femmes First, the RIDEnjoy team wants to deliver a strong message to the cycling community that together, everyone can do more.

Immersive event for young and old as first CVAs handed out

Children as young as three and seniors in the 70s were all part of the celebrations. Singapore’s top buskers, Sheng Li and Arya Yunata, delighted riders with live acoustic sets as part of the event while the RIDEnjoy Cycling Video Awards (CVA) handed out nine awards. The CVA is the first of its kind in Singapore.

There were over 80 video submissions by local cyclists and public voting for Video of the Year saw the top award going to local content creator Alan Ng who passed away on New Year’s Eve.

The late Alan Ng's video, Bromption in Amsterdam, is the winner for RIDEnjoy's Video of the Year award
